Djibril Cissé is one of the most prolific strikers that have ever graced us with his presence. Even though his peak form did not last too long, he managed to leave us with many great memories that we will share with our predecessors.
Since the saying goes ‘give your idols the flowers while they are still here’, we wanted to take some time out and dedicate a moment to Djibril Cissé. We’ll be taking a closer look into his early life, career, what has he been doing lately, etc. Let’s begin breaking down the details, starting with his current ventures.
Panathinaikos Chicago – Djibril’s Current Team
In 2021, Djibril Cissé joined Panathinaikos Chicago, a fourth-tier club in the USA. Even though he is 39 years old, he is still proving that he is capable of playing at a high level and will show no signs of slowing down.
Personal Life and Start of His Soccer Career
Djibril Cissé is born on August 12th 1981. He showed a passion for soccer at his young age and he was able to reap all of the benefits of his dedication when he joined AC Aires in 1989. At the time, he was eight years old. Later on, he had a six-month stay at Nîmes Olympique and finally joined AJ Auxerre in the club’s youth system.
He was very proficient with his skills, which is why he graduated to the first team in 1998. That year marked the start of an uprising of the young talented French striker. Djibril Cissé spent a total of 6 years at AJ Auxerre, during which he played 167 games, scored 89 goals, and assisted another 5.
In 2004, he was under the radar of numerous great teams from all over Europe and in the end, AJ Auxerre reached an agreement with Liverpool.
Peak During Liverpool Days
At the time, Liverpool was one of the best teams in the world, which is why it was a great deal for Djibril Cissé to sign with this club. The signing marked the beginning of the peak of Djibril’s career. Even though he spent just 3 years at the club, he received one of the biggest honors.
He won the FA Cup in 2006, The UEFA Super Cup in the 05/06 season, but most importantly, he was part of the team that had one of the greatest Champions League games, if not the greatest. Who could ever forget the magical night in Istanbul? For those that are not too familiar with the 2005 CL final, we are more than happy to give you an insight.
The 2005 Final
The Champions League final of the 2005/2006 season was played between Milan and Liverpool. The game took place in Istanbul and in the first half, Milan trashed Liverpool as they had a 3-0 lead in the first half. Everyone in the world was writing Liverpool off, but the squad, including Djibril Cissé, knew that the job was far from finished.
Liverpool came back as a reborn team in the second half and managed to even the score very fast. After the final 90-minute whistle, the teams went on to play extra time, but no goals were scored. So, with a final result of 3-3, a penalty shootout was to decide the winner. Liverpool managed to win the penalty shootout 3-2 and Djibril Cissé was one of the players that scored for Liverpool.
The reason why this was such a historical moment for both Liverpool and Djibril Cissé is that Cissé suffered a freak accident before the CL game. On 30th October 2004, Liverpool was up against Blackburn. At the time, Cissé only played 19 games for the club. During this game, he and Jay McEvely were battling for the ball.
Unfortunately, Djibril Cissé’s boot got caught in the turf and he suffered a very serious fractured. Both his fibula and tibia snapped and he was forced to go on surgery. Some reports even stated that he was minutes away from having his leg amputated due to the seriousness of the injury.
While many speculated that the injury will likely force him into retirement, Djibril’s will was much greater and not only did he come back, but from what we said about the 2005 final in Istanbul, he came back stronger than ever.
In 2007, Cissé joined Marseille on a loan and later on, the club bought him off. After his time in Marseille, Djibril moved to several clubs in and out of the Premier League. He was part of Sunderland (loan), Panathinaikos, Lazio, QPR, Al-Ghafara (loan), Kuban Krasnodar, Bastia, Saint-Pierroise, Yverdon, and AC Vicenza. In these teams (including Liverpool and AJ Auxerre), Djibril Cissé had a total of 607 matches. He managed to score 271 goals and assist another 51, which is quite an impressive stat.
National Duties
Thanks to his quality, Djibril Cissé was also called up on national duty numerous times. He began his national career at a very young age as he was called up on France’s U16 team. He had his debut for the senior team on 18th May 2002. In the national jersey, Cissé had a total of 41 games in which he clocked in a total of 9 goals and 4 assists.
